Ewald Mataré, born in Aachen in 1887, is considered one of the most renowned sculptors of the 20th century in Germany. His depictions of animals, particularly cows, earned him great acclaim as a painter, draftsman, graphic artist, and animal sculptor, establishing him as a unique figure in German sculpture. As a professor at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1946 to 1957, he also influenced artists such as Joseph Beuys and Günter Haese. The traveling exhibition (Berlin, Hamburg, Neumarkt i.d.OPf.) traces Mataré’s stylistic and formal development, with a special focus on his animal sculptures. He died in Büderich in 1965; his estate is housed at the Museum Kurhaus Kleve.
